The Seattle metropolitan area is an urban conglomeration in the U.S. state of Washington that comprises Seattle, its surrounding satellites and suburbs. It contains the three most populous counties in the state&mdash;King, Snohomish, and Pierce&mdash;and is considered part of the greater Puget Sound region.

Greater Seattle Area

Seattle, a city on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland. Washington State&rsquo;s largest city, it&rsquo;s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World&rsquo;s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.
Seattle has a history of boom-and-bust cycles, like many other cities near areas of extensive natural and mineral resources. Seattle has risen several times economically, then gone into precipitous decline, but it has typically used those periods to rebuild solid infrastructure.
The first such boom, covering the early years of the city, rode on the lumber industry. During this period the road now known as Yesler Way won the nickname "Skid Road," supposedly after the timber skidding down the hill to Henry Yesler's sawmill. The later dereliction of the area may be a possible origin for the term which later entered the wider American lexicon as Skid Row. Like much of the American West, Seattle saw numerous conflicts between labor and management, as well as ethnic tensions that culminated in the anti-Chinese riots of 1885&ndash;1886. This violence originated with unemployed whites who were determined to drive the Chinese from Seattle (anti-Chinese riots also occurred in Tacoma). In 1900, Asians were 4.2% of the population. Authorities declared martial law and federal troops arrived to put down the disorder.
Seattle had achieved sufficient economic success that when the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 destroyed the central business district, a far grander city-center rapidly emerged in its place. Finance company Washington Mutual, for example, was founded in the immediate wake of the fire. However, the Panic of 1893 hit Seattle hard.

Whidbey Island is in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, Washington. The island&rsquo;s rugged terrain spans beaches, hills and farmland. On its northwest tip, Deception Pass State Park offers clifftop views, forest trails and freshwater lakes. To the south, Fort Casey Historical State Park is home to a lighthouse and gun battery. The coastal towns of Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Langley have boutiques, cafes and galleries.&nbsp;
Langley is a city in Island County, Washington, United States. It sits near the south end of Whidbey Island, overlooking the Saratoga Passage. It is the third largest incorporated area on Whidbey. The population was 1,035 at the 2010 census, while the ZCTA for Langley's post office had a population of 4,878.&nbsp;
Hansville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. Its population was 3,091 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The coastal community is located at the northern end of the Kitsap Peninsula and is about 16 miles northeast of Poulsbo, the nearest city.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Bainbridge Island is a small city in western Washington state. It&rsquo;s connected to Seattle by ferry. The forested Bloedel Reserve has landscaped gardens and trails. Nearby, coastal Fay Bainbridge Park and Campground features an east-facing beach with views of the Cascade Mountains and Puget Sound. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, in an eco-friendly building, offers rotating exhibitions by contemporary local artists.
Vashon is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. It covers an island alternately called Vashon Island or Vashon-Maury Island, the largest island in Puget Sound south of Admiralty Inlet. The population was 10,624 at the 2010 census and the size is 36.9 square miles.
Bremerton is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 37,729 at the 2010 census and an estimated 41,405 in 2019, making it the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula. Bremerton is home to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Bremerton Annex of Naval Base Kitsap.

The Islands

Edmonds is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. It is located in the southwest corner of the county, facing Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west. The city is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and is located 15 miles (24 km) north of Seattle and 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Everett. With a population of 39,709 residents in the 2010 U.S. census, Edmonds is the third most populous city in the county. The estimated population in 2019 was 42,605. Edmonds was established in 1876 by logger George Brackett, who bought the land claim of an earlier settler. It was incorporated as a city in 1890, shortly before the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. Early residents of the city were employed by the shingle mills and logging companies that operated in the area until the 1950s. The hills surrounding Edmonds were developed into suburban bedroom communities in the mid-to-late 20th century and subsequently annexed into the city. Edmonds is a regional hub for the arts, with museums, specialized facilities, and major annual festivals within the city's downtown area. The city is connected to nearby areas by two state highways and the state ferry system, which operates a ferry route to Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula. Public transit service in Edmonds is centered around the downtown train station, served by Amtrak and Sounder commuter trains, and includes several Community Transit bus routes that travel through outlying neighborhoods.

Edmonds

Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. A suburb east of Seattle, its population was 93,010 in a 2019 census estimate, which made it the sixth largest city in the county and the thirteenth largest in the state. The city's downtown waterfront has restaurants, art galleries, a performing arts center, public parks, beaches, and a collection of public art, primarily bronze sculptures. Kirkland was the original home of the Seattle Seahawks; the NFL team's headquarters and training facility were located at the Lake Washington Shipyard (now Carillon Point) along Lake Washington for their first ten seasons (1976&ndash;85), then at nearby Northwest University through 2007. Warehouse chain Costco previously had its headquarters in Kirkland. While Costco is now headquartered in Issaquah, the city is the namesake of its "Kirkland Signature" store brand.

Kirkland

Bellevue is a city in Washington state, across Lake Washington from Seattle. Downtown Park has a large lawn, gardens and a waterfall. Nearby, the Bellevue Arts Museum features craft and design exhibitions, plus a sculpture garden. The Bellevue Botanical Garden highlights Pacific Northwest plants, and includes woodlands and wetlands. KidsQuest Children&rsquo;s Museum has interactive science, tech and art exhibitions.
Bellevue lies between&nbsp;Lake Washington&nbsp;to the west and the smaller&nbsp;Lake Sammamish&nbsp;to the east. Much of Bellevue is drained by the&nbsp;Kelsey Creek&nbsp;watershed, whose source is located in the Larsen Lake and&nbsp;Phantom Lake&nbsp;green belt&nbsp;and whose outlet is near where&nbsp;Interstate 90&nbsp;meets Lake Washington's eastern shore. The city is bisected by&nbsp;Interstate 405&nbsp;running north&ndash;south, and the southern portion is crossed from west to east by Interstate 90. The&nbsp;State Route 520&nbsp;freeway roughly delineates the upper reaches of Bellevue.
According to the&nbsp;United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.47 square miles (94.46&nbsp;km2), of which 31.97 square miles (82.80&nbsp;km2) is land and 4.50 square miles (11.65&nbsp;km2) is water. The city's name is derived from a&nbsp;French&nbsp;term for "beautiful view". Under favorable weather conditions, scenic vistas of the&nbsp;Olympic Mountains&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cascade Mountains can be viewed from hilltops (and strategically positioned high-rise buildings) within the incorporated city. South of I-90, the city continues up&nbsp;Cougar Mountain, at the top of which is an unincorporated King County location called Hilltop. To the west of Cougar Mountain, Bellevue includes the&nbsp;Coal Creek, Somerset, and&nbsp;<a href="\" title="Factoria, Bellevue">Factoria</a>&nbsp;neighborhoods.
Bellevue is bordered by the cities of&nbsp;Kirkland&nbsp;to the north and&nbsp;Redmond&nbsp;to the northeast along the&nbsp;Overlake&nbsp;and&nbsp;Crossroads&nbsp;neighborhoods. Across the short&nbsp;East Channel Bridge, I-90 connects Bellevue to&nbsp;Mercer Island&nbsp;to the southwest.&nbsp;Issaquah&nbsp;is to the east, down I-90 at the south end of Lake Sammamish. The city is bordered to the west by many affluent suburbs such as&nbsp;Medina,&nbsp;Clyde Hill,&nbsp;Hunts Point&nbsp;and&nbsp;Yarrow Point. The south end of Bellevue is bordered by the city of&nbsp;Renton, and to the southeast, the relatively recently incorporated city of&nbsp;Newcastle.

Bellevue

Renton is a city in King County, Washington, and a suburb of Seattle. Situated 11 miles (18 km) southeast of downtown Seattle, Renton straddles the southeast shore of Lake Washington, at the mouth of the Cedar River. After a long history as an important salmon fishing area for Native Americans, Renton was first settled by people of European descent in the 1860s. Its early economy was based on coal mining, clay production, and timber export. Today, Renton is best known as the final assembly point for the Boeing 737 family of commercial airplanes, but it is also home to a growing number of well known manufacturing, technology, and healthcare organizations, including Boeing Commercial Airplanes Division, Paccar, Kaiser Permanente, IKEA, Providence Health &amp; Services, UW Medicine, and Wizards of the Coast. As of 2019, the population of Renton is estimated at 101,751,[6] up from 90,927 at the 2010 census. Renton is currently the eighth-largest city in Washington and the fourth-largest in King County. Since 2008, the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks have had a training facility in Renton, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC), which is the second-largest facility in the NFL at 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2).

Renton

Shoreline is a city in King County, Washington, United States. It is located between the city limits of Seattle and the Snohomish County border, approximately 9 miles (14 km) north of Downtown Seattle. As of the 2010 census, the population of Shoreline was 53,007, making it the 20th largest city in the state; by 2019, the population had risen to an estimated 57,027. Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Shoreline ranks 91st of 522 areas in the state of Washington to be ranked.
